Qualidiab: first ever multi-country smart card-based solution targets patient care and aids doctors, nurses, administrators

Diabeare France and Diabem Spain, national authorities responsible for evaluating diabetes treatment, together with Gemplus leave-site.gif (146 bytes), provider of smart card solutions, launch Qualidiab, a smart card-based solution for the management and treatment of diabetes.

Designed with the support of the European Commission, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the international Diabetes Federation (IDF), Qualidiab specifically addresses the needs of diabetics and all those involved in the treatment of this chronic disease including general practitioners, specialists, hospitals and health authorities.

Qualidiab is made up of a smart card containing a microchip on which are stored key data concerning the patient, and a Gemplus card reader linked to a remote computer. The system is designed to provide a tool that is simple, effective and secure. Medical confidentiality is achieved through differentiated rights of access to data. These are controlled by the smart card so that for example nurses do not have access to the same data as doctors or administrators.
